  • Nautical Terms & TerminologyUnderstanding the language of the marine world is like trying to learn a pirate’s secret code while juggling fish. Let us explain why a sheet isn’t for your bed, why “heave ho” doesn’t mean throw up (most of the time), and why “dead reckoning” is surprisingly less ominous than it sounds.
  • Why do we have tides?Have you ever wondered what causes the tides? Check out this video, which introduces the forces that create the tides we experience on Earth.

  • Interactive Rule Book (COLREGs / IRPCS)Whether you’re a novice sailor or a seasoned skipper, we can help you navigate the IRPCS confidently and clearly. Our easy-to-use, easy-to-understand, plain English rule book with helpful interpretations of what each rule means.
  • The Salty Sea BlogFrom salty old sea dogs to fresh-faced deckhands, this blog is for anyone who finds peace, adventure, and a bit of mischief on the water. So hoist the main, set your course, and let’s sail into the stories, lessons, and musings that make life on the sea so irresistible.

About Us

At a Glance: We are a club of around 150 members, ranging from people in their 20s to their 80s. Our membership have members in full time employment as well as members in retirement. This means there there is good access to both of our boats seven days a week. We own two yachts RelaX of Phoenix is an X-Yachts X.40 (7 berths) Quartette is a Westerly Oceanquest 35 (6 berths) We offer our members Cruising, Racing and Training (both RYA and informal) Members pay an annual membership fee and then a fee for each day they sail There are no limits on the number of days you can sail in a year, subject to availability Suitably qualified and experienced members are assessed as club skippers, and can then book the yachts as skipper. Any member (skipper or crew) can join any club sail. We run a range of club sails from our base in Haslar Marina, Gosport; from single days on the Solent, to cross channel trips and extended cruises, where different crews join the boat for a week at a time as a relay. Our summer cruises have been all over Europe. Our Club-organised programme of extended cruises, racing and training is finalised each year in the autumn, and published on this site each year. Maybe you would like to try a Trial Sail to meet a few of our members & sail one of our boats, for more information see our website. It doesn’t matter whether you are an experienced sailor, but without your own boat, or a complete beginner wondering whether you would enjoy sailing, we would love to tell you more about our club. Please fill in the contact form below and we will be in touch. Thank you for your interest in Phoenix Yacht Club!
