Go West Sailing is a sailing school and sailing adventures Scotland-based company with international reach. We offer RYA recognised training courses (practical, shore-based, online), offshore sailing adventures, yacht charter and delivery. Our sailing adventures along the stunning west coast of Scotland include locations such as Barra, the Orkneys, St. Kilda, the Hebrides, and the Isle of Man. For those seeking more distant and adventurous voyages, our offshore sailing adventures aboard Global Surveyor will take you to bucket-list destinations like Greenland, Antarctica, South America (including Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina), Iceland, the Azores, Africa, Cape Verde and more. We have a wide range of yachts available to charter – you can choose from the Beneteau Oceanis (45, 411, 393), Dehler Varianta 44, Bavaria (44, 42, 40, 38), Elan 434, Ovni 43, Jeanneau 42.2 and 379 Sun Odyssey, and Hanse 325. Our charter prices include 24/7 shore support, a handover by a qualified skipper, weather and routing, a dinghy with an outboard engine, and detailed charts and pilot books to help you make the most of your sailing adventure.

For centuries, sailors have guided their ships across oceans using celestial navigation or nautical astronomy. The RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Theory course teaches advanced techniques to those aspiring towards blue water cruising.

This course will introduce you to the principles of astro navigation, the practical use of a sextant, measurement of time, compass checking, and position fixing by the sun. For modern sailors it’s not only a fascinating art, but an essential aid to electronic navigation when crossing oceans.

This course will also cover the concepts of worldwide meteorology, including tropical revolving storms, and passage planning for ocean voyaging. Course content is expected to take a minimum of 40 hours to learn, plus exam time.
