  • Know-How

We believe every day’s a school day on a boat! That’s why we built Nautical Know-How, dedicated to answering your questions. Even better, if it can’t answer your question immediately, you can request it, and we’ll add it to our knowledge base.

      • Nautical Terms & Terminology
Understanding the language of the marine world is like trying to learn a pirate’s secret code while juggling fish. Let us explain why a sheet isn’t for your bed, why “heave ho” doesn’t mean throw up (most of the time), and why “dead reckoning” is surprisingly less ominous than it sounds.
      • Why do we have tides?
Have you ever wondered what causes the tides? Check out this video, which introduces the forces that create the tides we experience on Earth.
      • What causes our weather?
A video introducing the drivers behind our weather, part of our RYA Day Skipper & RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster® Offshore theory courses.
      • Buoyage Flashcards
Flashcards designed to help remember the buoys in the IALA system. If you want to learn them in detail, our module ‘Getting in and out of harbour‘, covers the IALA system and different buoys used.
      • Interactive Rule Book (COLREGs / IRPCS)
Whether you’re a novice sailor or a seasoned skipper, we can help you navigate the IRPCS confidently and clearly. Our easy-to-use, easy-to-understand, plain English rule book with helpful interpretations of what each rule means.

Our members range from juniors just starting out to seasoned sailors competing nationally. Beaver SC supports a wide range of fleets including Streaker, Laser, RS Tera, RS 300, RS 400, Topper, and handicap fleets. We also welcome other classes such as Mirror, Bahia, Xenon, Pico, and catamarans. Paddleboarding and windsurfing are also popular on our waters, and many members enjoy casual sailing alongside racing. For junior members, we have a thriving youth scene with structured training and fun activities designed to develop confidence and independence on the water. We are a recognised RYA Training Centre, delivering high-quality instruction in dinghy sailing and powerboating, led by qualified instructors in a safe and supportive environment. From adult beginners to junior courses and improver sessions, we’re passionate about helping people develop their skills and love for the sport. Our training programme runs alongside regular social sailing and club racing, with opportunities to progress from novice to confident racer. Many of our members volunteer as instructors or safety crew, making it a true team effort. Our well-equipped clubhouse provides changing facilities, a galley kitchen, and a large social area overlooking the reservoir. The club also has a secure boat park and easy launching facilities. Members can store their own boats on site, and we offer memberships at affordable rates. What sets Beaver SC apart is our warm and inclusive atmosphere. Our members are always happy to offer help, advice, or a hand with rigging a boat. Social events, camping weekends, BBQs, and regattas are a key part of the club calendar, making it a great place to meet new friends and get involved. Whether you’re interested in learning to sail, improving your skills, racing, or just enjoying time on the water, Beaver Sailing Club welcomes you.
